Landscaping with Orchids

What is Orchidscaping?

Orchidscaping is the use of orchids permanently planted into specially prepared beds or attached to trees, shrubs or rocks in the appropriate spot in the temperate garden. Combined with other traditional ornamentals such as palms, ferns, flowering perennials, shrubs, trees and herbs etc. you can create some of the most interesting and beautiful gardens imaginable, depending upon budget and your immediate climatic factors.

The landscaped orchid garden is the perfect concept for the lazy or unwilling gardener or busy working couple, yet whom still want the perfection and benefits of the orchids natural beauty without having to put in many hours of hands on work or the hassle of a running a green house. Many orchids once established in the garden will virtually look after them selves, assuming the right conditions have been provided or are already available. Reducing maintenance to a minimum, often to just pest control and maintenance of misting and watering systems, and annual top dressing of organic fertiliser etc.

There are over 2000 different orchids potentially suitable for use in the garden in temperate climates. However, one must bear in mind some renovations to the garden or property may be necessary to safely accommodate certain orchids for different situations. Some orchids are even suitable for indoor, balcony and window sill use. Perfect for those with limited space.

Unfortunately there have been two long lived false myths on orchids. The first being epiphytic orchids are parasites. The second they all need a heated glass house for successful cultivation. Both of these myths are absolutely false and incorrect.

Firstly there is not a single orchid that behaves like a parasite. All orchids are either epiphytes, lithophytes, saprophytes or terrestrial, never parasitic.

Secondly, some orchids culture does indeed require a heated glass house in temperate climates. But when you consider there are more than 33000 species of orchid occurring world wide in all corners of the globe(except for desert centres and antarctic regions). And many of those from temperate regions, it is more than logical and research has been carried out, there is potentially a very large selection of orchids to choose from suited to temperate regions, depending upon your given situation. That number does not include the 100000 or more orchid hybrids made by man over the last 150 years or so.

A correctly designed and constructed orchid garden will give you an amazing variety of blooms in size, shape, colour, and many perfumes the year round. Giving you a relaxed and enchanted feeling of satisfaction and an interesting and romantic paradise for entertaining guests, not to mention the possibility of owning a prize winning garden.
