Darkroom Fun - The Railway Bridge.

This is a raw scan of an 8" x 10" photograph, no Photoshop here.

"How was it done?" I hear you ask. It's a matter of positives and negatives. First of all I printed a colour slide (Positive)as a black and white photograph (normally done from a negative).

The end result should be a negative image high in contrast. That's unless you deliberatly turn on the room light in the darkroom while the print is still developing in the tray. The finer details (in the foreground) which were starting to show now reverse the direction giving the "ghostly effect".

The print was further enhanced, while it initially looks like a sepia tone I believe it was selenium toning which is a richer colour. The process is known as solarization.

Sometimes when you break the rules you get an interesting result.

Clear as mud?
